Location: 1363 Veterans Hwy Ste 40, Hauppauge, NY 11788
When: March 16, 2013
Time: 9:30 am–12:40 pm

Join us for a day of workshops for adoptive families.

Rita Taddonio, LCSW, and 30-year veteran of child development and family counseling, will be leading these workshops and will be joined by senior social worker Mary McCabe for our Long Island location.

The first workshop is Building Resilience from 9:30 a.m. -10:30 a.m. Life for a child is full of little ups and downs as well as inescapable challenges like subjects they find difficult in school, peer pressure and perhaps bullies. Resilience is one of the most important skills you can teach your child. We will show you how to instill confidence and character in your children and position them to overcome adversity.

The second workship is Adoption + Teens = Complicated from 10:35 a.m. - 11:35 a.m. Helping your teen though adolescence can be diffult and adoption adds a layer of complexity to the already confounding adolescent stages. As your adopted child becomes a teen, they may need more support and understanding from you. Learn to recognize your child’s changing needs as they explore their feelings around identity and origin, peers and their relationship with you, their parent.

The third and final workshop is Finding the Right Words to Talk about Adoption from 11:40 a.m. - 12:40 p.m. This workshop will give you the tools to keep an open communication with your child about the complexities adoption brings to family life and respond to the difficult questions your child may have. Learn how to talk with your child about their birth story, how to help them answer questions from their peers and support them as they incorporate their story.
